Those of us who have watched The Expanse know that the Mormon church is saving this money to build a generation ship to settle distant stars and bring the Good News of Joseph Smith to the galaxy.
On top of the very dubious historicity of the Church's founding, it has clearly morphed into a money-obsessed organization that uses the fear of hell to keep the people tithing. All religious organizations disgust me, and the Mormons more than most.

What, dear sir, is the mission of the church then? If you don’t want your members to tell you what to do with the money, and you are not spending it on charity, then the only logical conclusion we can come to is that the church’s mission is to make profits, like every other business.
You, the church leadership, tell the members of your church to tithe 10% plus more for charitable causes no matter their financial situation. You check their worth regularly to ensure you are getting your money every year from the peons in the church. You shame and guilt people to show up day after day, week after week, year after year, just so they can put the money in the baskets. These people are facing medical catastrophes, job loss, financial hardship, fixed incomes and all sorts of issues, but you insist they never falter on making their tithes. Promising its charity. Telling them you are spending it on worthy causes. Giving them a superiority complex that they are better because they spend on charity more than anyone else. And what does it go to? Where does all that money end up? In offshore accounts to grow and grow, it doesn’t even go into the temples you build, as fancy and gilt as they look. Do you think you’ll get to spend it on Kolob? In the afterlife?
I guess what do you expect from a religion made up by a con man.
This is why I LOVE 60 𝑀𝑖𝑛𝑢𝑡𝑒𝑠. Sad to say that Mike Wallace and Harry Reasoner are long gone and Dan Rather is doing his own thing, but the basic idea of well-disciplined investigative journalism is alive and well and living in the CBS newsroom.
The PROBLEM is the IRS. Hell, they said it themselves: the likelihood of the LDS church getting any kind of serious scrutiny from the Internal Revenue Service is next to non-existent ... which 𝗣𝗜𝗦𝗦𝗘𝗦 𝗠𝗘 𝗢𝗙𝗙!!! Yeah, I'm sure that the Mormons can buy all the lawyers they want. Seems to me that the federal government could (and SHOULD!) take similar action and grasp this stinking nettle, once and for all.
Then, too, I'd like a pony and a plastic rocket ... and I'm not even Malcolm Reynolds.

So for a number of years before her death, my mother spent several conversations with me complaining about how the media never talks about all the good things churches do. To some small degree, she did have a point; but it would be remiss of me not point out that most of those 'good things' come with proselytizing attached and are often less charitable than they may appear at first blush - which is likely why the media doesn't report on them anyway.
That said, most anyone paying any attention at all can figure out that some churches aren't doing anywhere near the amount of community good they like to claim with their congregation's donations. Sure, the LDS is the church at hand today and may well be one of the most egregious offenders, but they're hardly alone in their corruption. To my knowledge, the Vatican likely outstrips the Mormon church, though I'll admit it's also quite difficult to make an accurate comparison. The real reason churches aren't getting caught is because they've been able, by and large, to make themselves exceptions to the various government institutions and policies that should be watching for this very sort of thing. They've carved out nice little nooks for themselves that mean the fox is guarding the hen house and they can pretend they're helping the local community when the real goal is getting more butts in the seats and more money in the collection plate. It's always been a racket, and they have zero intention of allowing anyone to fix it without a fight. The worst part is while some Mormons might leave the church over this, it's unlikely to be the major numbers we'd all like to see; too many Mormons are so embedded in their church they can't even conceive of leaving for any reason, no matter how justified.
TL;DR: The con is a feature, not a bug; expect more of the same going forward.
